Re: BOOKS! BOOKS!
So...Has anyone read Rick Riordan's Red Pyramid? (My brother got it signed by the author:) )
I personally much prefer it to his Percy Jackson books, for several reasons. Firstly, the language and humor were much less annoying (I always thought that Percy Jackson made me think of two things; how well Riordan encapsulated the average American teen, and how completely obnoxious the average American teen is). Also, I hate the main characters much less (I liked the Olympians books, but thought that Percy was annoying, arrogant, reckless, and possessing a ridiculously low amount of common sense.) The plot was interesting and fast-moving, and also a little less improbable an exception would be the part where they defeat one villain by feeding her a lot of salsa).
One thing I did NOT like was how they keep running into supposedly "invincible" enemies, who always turn out to be very vulnerable, which detracts from the tension. That was one thing I loved about The Matrix, the fact that Neo and the others were fighting against the ever-present, undefeatable, very real and deadly threat of the Agents.
Anyway, I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the sequel.

Re: BOOKS! BOOKS!
I just read a great book called "Going Bovine." It is a hilarious book with a bunch of deeper meanings mixed in there. The only problem I have with it is its overuse of explicit language, but it's not so overused as to detract from the book's appeal.
Re: BOOKS! BOOKS!
Dan was talking about that book... he said it was really funny and inappropriate or something.
Anyway, I'm reading the book Monster by Frank Peretti (who has recently become my favorite author) and it is really awesome.

No, Dan said that it was supposed to be funny, but it was stupid and inappropriate (I think that I would trusts Jay's opinion more XD).IzNotSpontaneous wrote:Dan was talking about that book... he said it was really funny and inappropriate or something.

Anyway, a month or so ago (mebbe less), I read Spook Country by William Gibson and really enjoyed it. It was much less inappropriate than his Nueromancer, and, although it was not sci-fi, both of the plots were really cool, and I liked the characters a lot more. I would recommend it to all of you, but you should probably ask your parents (my dad recommended it to me XD) b/c one of the main characters is addicted to prescription drugs.

I just finished Monster... and well... I'm scared of the dark again. Such an amazing book. it has an amazing plot. I never saw it coming. One word to describe the book would be "hunted." you should read it!
but really, I'm scared of the dark!

Re: BOOKS! BOOKS!
I am currently/was recently reading:
- Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring - J.J.R. Tolkien
- The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe - Douglas Adams
- [re-reading] The Dangerous Days Of Daniel X - James Patterson
I am about to read [because I borrowed these as well]:
- Daniel X: Watch The Skies - James Patterson
- Max - James Patterson
All of which are rather long books. There, I'm reading. Happy?

Re: BOOKS! BOOKS!
I am currently reading: This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti
ummm... well... I don't recall being unhappy about you not reading? and how do you manage to read 3 books at once? If a book has me hooked, I refuse to read another book until I finish it.

Re: BOOKS! BOOKS!
Well, Lord Of The Rings was the assigned book for the speedreading class, but we weren't allowed to read ahead, so that's on pause.
I just finished reading The Dangerous Days Of Daniel X.
And The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe is the current book in a more literal and direct sense.

Re: BOOKS! BOOKS!
Well, I saw it in an ad and basically begged for the class. Turned out to be ~$350 but my parents got it anyway.
I wanted this class so that I don't waste so much time reading for my two literature classes next year.

Re: BOOKS! BOOKS!
I've heard so much about the brilliance of the Discworld series I'm gonna start reading it...just got the first book.
Re: BOOKS! BOOKS!
Note that the first and second, while good, are overall some of the worst in the series.
Read them, but do not judge by them (they're not bad, but not the best.)

Re: BOOKS! BOOKS!
I didn't find discworld all that exciting. I didn't enjoy them that much

Re: BOOKS! BOOKS!
I am here to recommend the book Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
Suffice to say that Neil Gaiman called it the greatest work of English fantasy in the last 70 years.

Re: BOOKS! BOOKS!
Furthermore, I'd recommend his later books (i.e. 90s onwards) as starting points. I think Guards! Guards! is a good place to start.azer wrote:Note that the first and second, while good, are overall some of the worst in the series.

Re: BOOKS! BOOKS!
Guards, Guards! is good, but I would advise starting with Mort. That is where most people say he started coming into his own.
Re: BOOKS! BOOKS!
new books. Besides Lord Of The Rings [Book 1], that I bought.
The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkien
Maximum Ride: School's Out, Forever - James Patterson
Maximum Ride: Saving The World and Other Extreme Sports - James Patterson
and two Elton John biographies that I decided to reread and I will not name.

Re: BOOKS! BOOKS!
You forgot the first Maximum Ride: The Angel Expiriment. and Maximum Ride: The Final Warning, which is after Extreme Sports. And then their's the books Max and Fang that both continue the series.
Oh yea, and I am reading one of the most epic book series of my life. It's called the Kiesha'ra, and it starts with the book Hawksong. It is epic. trust me.
I'm currently on Wolfcry, the fourth book.
