Paradoxes! Empty Paradoxes!

Post  eklipse13 Thu Dec 10, 2009 1:54 pm

Talk about paradoxes here:

(examples)

The Liar Paradox:
This statement is false.

The Ontological Paradox:
I went back in time and killed my father, which means I could not exist, which means I could not have killed my father, which means I do exist, which means I killed my father...

solution to the ontological paradox: by killing your father, he never existed, so you had a different father, meaning the person you killed was not you father.

really, if you were to go back and time and kill your father you wouldn't b/c if you did, you wouldn't be able to b/c you already did therefore you don't exist, and so once the infinite time cycle goes around once or whatever, you'll never exist,

(translation, if you do, you did, and you don't exist therefore you can't really) Think about it, you'll hurt your head Wink

The Liar Paradox:
This statement is false.

which statement?, exactly

ok, you can't go back in time to kill your say, mother, because if you did you wouldn't exist and therefore not have the ability to do it! (you can't do what you can)

yes, mother is different. Wink

well, then again, it depends in what point of time you kill your father, because at some point you'd be a different person, so this would still be possible. Laughing

It's incredibly complicated, depending on at what point in time you did it. Puzzled

moved to general: thought you guys were going to spam it, but you didn't, so...

@felicia: The statement that says, "this statement is false." it is similar to jon's most recent post before this one.

the thing is that it says "this statement," which infers it as talking about itself.

Here's another fix:

One one side of a piece of paper it states:
"THE STATEMENT ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS PAPER IS TRUE"
On the other:
"THE STATEMENT ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS PAPER IS FALSE"

think about it.

well, the other side of *this paper

*this is to broad of a term, for all I know you are talking about the paper in California!

(refrain from using this in paradoxes like that)

yes "this" is an excruciatingly vague term, but it is used in most paradoxes and you can't do anything about it. Razz
